I composed this song in Portuguese on the bus to Sambaqui one afternoon while living in Lagoa de Conceição, Florianopolis, Brazil. I played it on the ukulele several times in Floripa, but last year here in Minneapolis, I added other instruments to the arrangement. Dedicated to all my dear friends from this era. With lots of love, Jim Clifford

A VIDA NA LAGOA - JIM QUINDIM
INTRO:
Hoje a noite tem o samba em Sambaqui.
Hoje a noite tem esperança que o Deus me livre,
Dos malucos, das loucuras,
Na Lagoa sempre me perseguem!
VERSO 1:
VERSO 2:
Tem argentinos, americanos, também uruguaios,
e os gremistas de cor azul,
Os paulistas, ba-hi-anos, colorados, curtibanos,
os alemães sempre úteis,
Os ingleses, holandeses, os suecos, japoneses,
e torcedores de avaí,
Figurenses, os franceses, peruanos e chineses,
Os manezinhos? nunca vi!
Criciumenses, os mineiros, irlandeses, canadenses,
Nenhuma fala português!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
LIFE IN LAGOA - JIM CLIFFORD
INTRO:
Tonight there's samba in Sambaqui.
Tonight I have hope that god will set me free,
From the crazies, from the madness,
That in Lagoa always follows me!
VERSE 1:
There are surfers, street vendors, rusty VWs
and prices that go sky high.
Bars for foreigners, a Mexican restaurant,
and heavy metal bands,
Mosquitoes, dogs, undecipherable accents,
and cowboys with mate tea in their hands,
Cold coffee, warm beer, out of phone credits,
and road repairs.
Avenida das Rendeiras with holiday traffic,
it's a total nightmare!
Chorus:
This is life in Lagoa
This is life as it is
This is life in Lagoa
It's the life I choose to live
It's life with the finer things
and some on the sketchy side
It's anarchy in Lagoa
There’s always a surprise
VERSE 2:
There are Argentines, Americans, also Uruguaians,
and the blue soccer uniforms of Grêmio,
People from São Paulo, Bahia, Colorado, Curitiba,
And the always useful Germans,
The English, the Dutch, the Swedes, the Japanese,
and futbol fans of Avaí,
Figurenses, the French, Peruvians and Chinese,
The locals? I've never seen!
Criciumenses, Mineiros, the Irish, and Canadians,
None are speaking Portuguese!
